While much of the buzz has been about Carnival Mardi Gras having a roller coaster, there's so much more that will be new and different. The ship’s design incorporates all of the latest and greatest in cruising. At the time of writing, Mardi Gras is the ninth-largest cruise ship in the world. The vessel is over 180,000 gross tons with a length of 1,130 feet, a beam of 137 feet, and a height of 19 decks. The 2,641 onboard staterooms can carry a maximum of 6,500 passengers at maximum capacity and a crew of 1,745 individuals. Extended Balcony staterooms feature a larger balcony with more outdoor lounge-around room, more open-air kick-back space… and back inside the room itself, all the comfort you expect with a great view and plenty of sunlight.

In 2005, the company (aka CP Ships) was purchased by TUI AG and became part of TUI's subsidiary Hapag-Lloyd Cruises (acquired in 1998). The 19-decks high new Mardi Gras vessel also features Carnival's largest Atrium and open-deck areas. In that time, she set the tone for how cruising would be viewed in the next 50 years.

Unlike traditional roller coasters, BOLT riders can control how fast they go as each "coaster" holds one or two people only. It traverses an 800-foot track that climbs and crawls, dips and swings over the deck at up to 40 miles per hour, sometimes reaching as much as 187 feet above the ocean. Upgraded Amenities for All
The facility ("BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster") will be built by Maurer Rides (Munich Germany-based company) specializing in roller coaster design and manufacturing. The race track has length 244 m (800 ft), with twists, turns, drops and speeds up to 64 kph (40 mph). Carnival's roller coaster is all-electric and allows 2 riders to race along in motorbike-like vehicles at height 57 m (187 ft) above the sea. The experience features breathtaking top-deck 360-degree views and ends with a high-speed turn around the funnel/smokestack. Many staterooms will feel familiar to long-time Carnival Cruisers with the traditional comfort and ambiance you expect from Carnival’s fleet. However, debuting on the Mardi Gras is a new luxury suite concept with luxury and exclusivity at its core.
The Mardi Gras can hold 5,282 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Mardi Gras has a space ratio of 35. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship has less space per person than average. The Mardi Gras uses a zone layout to break up large crowds across the ship, often making it feel less crowded. But whatever stateroom you book for a Mardi Gras cruise, whether a suite or otherwise, you can expect modern furnishings, a calming gray and blue color palette, more ample storage space and a luxury resort-style feel.

With Carnival suspending operations until February 2021, Mardi Gras will be among the early few cruise ships to begin sailings from Florida.
